OPEN WATER SWIMMING COMPETITIONS HELD IN INDIA AS RECOGNISED BY SWIMMING FEDERATION OF INDIA

  • Murahidabad Swimming Association of Behampore, Murahidabad organised world’s longest open water Swimming competition held in the Ganges annually since 1943. It is among the Top 50 Open Water Swims.
  • Ahiritola Youth Swimming Club, Kolkata, West Bengal organized 14 Km long Distance Swimming Competition held in Hooghly River.
  • Department of Sports, Youth Cultural Activities, Government of Gujarat organized Veer Savarkar All India Sea Swimming Competition 39 km. (21 Nautical Miles) from Chorwad to Veraval
  • Shree Ram Sea Swimming Club, Porbandar organized short and long distance swimming competition (upto 10 km.) at Porbandar.
  • The Aquatic Federation of Sindhudurg organized long distance sea swimming competition upto 10 km. at Sindhudurg
  • Swimming Association of Maharashtra organized 5 km. Sunk Rock to Gateway of India Sea Swimming Race.
  • Swimming Federation of India organized Open Water 10 km Swimming Competition.
  • National Institute of Swimming will organize 1,3 , 5 & 10 km Open Water Sea Swimming Competition in the month of February 2022.

Open Water Swimming Event in Olympics

  • Taking place in open water environment such as the sea, river and lakes, but with a premium on safety, the men’s and women’s 10 km Open Water Swimming Event is known as the Marathon Swimming Event.
  • The first Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2008 was held in a rowing basin at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
  • The second Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2012 was held in the Serpentine, a man-made lake in Hyde Park in the center of London, England.
  • The third Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2016 was held in Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • The fourth Olympic 10k Marathon Swim in 2020 was held in Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo Bay, Tokyo, Japan.
